2024 Election
A Message from MAP’s Executive Director
The results continue to come in and the analysis of yesterday’s election has begun. There will be much time for gaining better understanding of what happened and what it means for our country, for LGBTQ people and our families, for diverse communities, for businesses across the country, and for our democracy.
No matter what comes, MAP is made for these moments. We believe in the ability to have hard conversations, to find shared values, and to move us ever closer to opportunity and equality for all. All of our programs: LGBTQ, Democracy, and Open to All are incredibly important — today and in the days, months, and years ahead.
This election cycle saw transgender people being used as a political wedge issue in ways that were hurtful and demeaning. This rhetoric makes clear the necessary work ahead for MAP in our efforts to help transform America. Our mission has always been rooted in building understanding and empathy and now that is needed more than ever. In just a few weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a case about bans on health care for transgender youth. As our work at MAP has shown, this is the time to share the stories of transgender youth and their families and the communities who love and care for them.
We know the outcome of the election is deeply troubling for many LGBTQ people and their families, as well as diverse communities across the country. We stand ready to support advocates, policymakers, the media, and the public in understanding what policy proposals may mean, while shaping conversations about the key issues.
We also know that many states had pivotal elections. We at MAP will be tracking and analyzing state laws and policies and you can always count on our LGBTQ Equality Maps and our Democracy Maps for the most current, accurate, and accessible information about what’s happening in the states. On both LGBTQ issues and the strength of our democracy, MAP will continue to be the “go to” place for information about policies in the states.
This election also focused on the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion, with opponents of equality undermining efforts by businesses and higher educational institutions, governments, and others to ensure opportunity for all. Open to All, our business engagement program, will continue to advance the values of inclusion and belonging through trainings, innovative initiatives, and networking opportunities.
Thank you for your continued support of MAP. You will always be able to look to us for rigorous and thoughtful research, policy analysis, and tools that advance conversations, advance policy, and advance the collaborations that drive impact.
